Government Hydrographic Office

Bonita helps safer sailing in national waters with up-to-date information in Notices to Mariners

Global asset Management firm

About the agency

National Government Hydrographic Offices are responsible for providing up-to-date information necessary for safe navigation in national waters. Notices to Mariners have to be released on time, with information that is accurate and easy for the mariner to follow.

The objectives

This Hydrographic Office started executing their long-term vision, based on the recognition that location information has the power to unlock the true potential be-hind geospatial information, and making such information readily available to additional user communities would be very desirable. Improving the Hydrographic Office’s existing operations and production processes contributed to realizing that vision.

This presented an opportunity to greatly optimize the NtM production process, and to deploy modern software tools capable of automating it. The related geospatial data was already available in the chart production system or could be easily entered there when needed, making it desirable to replace manual data entry with automated digital data harvesting.

Challenges

The previous nautical publications production process at one such national Hydrographic Office was a manual, Excel-spreadsheet based, desktop publishing exercise with a very complex workflow and many operational challenges.

The project outcomes

After a lengthy, carefully phased digital transformation project, one Hydrographic Office is now using a Workflow Management System (WfMS) on the Bonita platform, integrated with the Geospatial Publications Module. The results:

  • Improved production efficiency and traceability
  • Key performance targets met consistently
  • Ease of doing business – more output with less labor
  • Greater consistency & reliability across final products
  • Continue to protect life at sea

The Benefits

  • Notices to Mariners for these national waters are more consistent and reliable, produced directly from geospatial data systems.
  • Information is processed and published much faster, and immediate notifications can be released in urgent cases.
  • Data streams replace static hard copy PDF publications.
  • The Hydrographic Office has improved internal discipline to apply properly engineered business processes, system driven and implemented with the appropriate checks to ensure that they are executed reliably and consistently every time.

"The team is happier and more concentrated on the production activities with less undesirable interruptions and less manual reporting. The new system allows users to conduct activities in the same order each time, leading to improved product quality and more consistent results. All activities are now traceable making team collaboration much simpler. Everyone can see real-time progress and status of cases within the notice production cycle, and this allows management to better plan and allocate resources."
